Thunderbolt and Lightning
Wed, September 16, 2009 — Hotel
This week we have been enjoying(!) a regular feature of late-summer Alpujarras weather; electrical storms. From last Sunday until today (Wednesday) we have had lovely, sunny mornings but by mid-afternoon the clouds have rolled over and some spectacular lightning has accompaied some moderate rain falls. None of these have been too disruptive to walking, provided you have set off early.
What this also means is that the countryside looks refreshed and the parched look that is quite common after a hot, dry summer has gone already. These periods of stormy weather rarely last as long as a week and once they are over we fully expect gentle and warm autumn days to follow, most likely right up until Christmas.
Another benefit is that much of the later cropping fruits, such as plums, apples, brambles, grapes and chestnuts, are getting a good drink and will be plump and juicy, making this year's harvest one of the best for a long, long time.
