Feliz Año Nuevo

Today, 28th December, is the day of “Los Santos Inocentes” (the saintly innocents), which is the Spanish equivalent of April Fools’ Day. A curious incident occurred which made us wonder which of the participants is the saintly innocent. A couple staying at the hotel went, with Sammy of course, walking the Cerro Gordo. After five hours they had to cross the river which is flowing fast and furious at this time of year. The young lady bravely took off her boots and waded through the freezing torrent. At that moment a farmer arrived and offered the young man his mule to cross the river. The young man gratefully accepted and was carried to his partner on the other bank. The farmer called the mule to come back for him, the young couple led the mule to the water and gave it some encouraging shoves, but no way would the mule return for his owner who eventually had to take off his boots and face the flood while his beast of burden looked on wisely from the other side.

We hope the coming year will be a happy and prosperous one for all our friends and guests and that we will all meet again at some stage in Berchules.
